Two Board-Certified Neurosurgeons Join The Spine Center at Black Hills Orthopedics

The Spine Center at Black Hills Orthopedics is celebrating the addition of two new care providers to their Rapid City and Mitchell, South Dakota locations. Joining the practice with ample expertise and experience, Drs. Troy Gust and Bryan Wellman are both board-certified neurosurgeons who have been serving South Dakota patients for over a decade each. Patients seeking back, neck and spine care are encouraged to call the practice at (605) 341-1414.

Having served patients in South Dakota since 2008, Dr. Gust is an expert in performing back and neck microdiscectomies, decompressions and fusions. A native of South Dakota, he is passionate about seeing his patients receive the expert back, neck and spine care they deserve to help them return to healthy, active lifestyles.

From minimally invasive spine surgery to spinal fusions, cervical artificial discs and spinal tumors, Dr. Wellman is very proud to take care of patients in the great community of Rapid City and the surrounding areas. He has served patients throughout South Dakota since 2002.

“We are excited to have Dr. Gust and Dr. Wellman join The Spine Center as part of our dedication to meeting the growing needs of our region,” said orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Robert Woodruff of The Spine Center at Black Hills Orthopedics. “Our new doctors are both experienced and devoted to keeping our community healthy and active, and we are proud to welcome them to our team.”

Both Drs. Gust and Wellman have additional specialty training in neurosurgery — surgery for the nerves, brain, spinal cord and spinal column.

Dr. Gust earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Upon moving to Kansas City, he completed a general surgery internship at The University of Kansas Medical Center. Following this, Dr. Gust remained at the university to undergo a neurosurgery residency. He is certified by The American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Wellman earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He then completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Dr. Wellman is also certified by The American Board of Neurological Surgery.
